Editor's Corner
As millions of health consumers become informed and empowered, they increasingly seek our services, often paying out of pocket today in order to insure their health tomorrow.
At the same time, just when we think we can take a deep breath and believe that our work as integrative practitioners is understood and honored, the “powers that would like to be” are hard at work inventing ways to discredit and control consumer’s health care choices.
Last week, another bill was introduced into Congress to control vitamin supplements and herbs. We can expect to see a media campaign begin shortly that will focus on discrediting vitamins and warnings for caution on the dangers of nature’s herbs used in global healthcare systems and traditions throughout millennia.
It is crucial that we all get involved to prevent the government and pharmaceutical industry from taking over and diminishing our freedom to choose how we treat and care for ourselves and others. Please read complete information below and take action.

Senators McCain and Dorgan Let Down Dietary Supplement Consumers
On Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Byron Dorgan (D-ND) introduced The Dietary Supplement Safety Act (DSSA) of 2010. This bill would amend DSHEA, undermining, if not entirely eliminating, consumer access to valuable dietary supplements, according to Jim Turner, Citizens for Health Board Chair.
Over the next few weeks, Citizens for Health will report in detail on specific sections of the bill, which would reverse supplements’ 100 year long status as foods, create onerous requirements for supplements not applied to other foods or even to prescription drugs, and wipe out significant numbers of small supplement manufacturers and sellers.

| Health Corner: Celiac Disease Rising, 1 in 100 Affected |
Celiac disease, a digestive disorder triggered by gluten in the diet, is over four times more common today than it was 50 years ago, according to a Mayo Clinic study published this month.

Milk thistle limits liver damage from chemotherapy
|
An herb used since ancient times to treat liver ailments may help reduce the liver damage caused by some cancer drugs, a recent study suggests.
In a study of 50 children undergoing chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), researchers found that the herb called milk thistle appeared to reduce treatment-related liver inflammation.

| Nutrition Corner: Omega 3 Fatty Acids |
Omega-3 fatty acids, from fish like salmon and other sources, have for years been shown to help lower levels of heart disease and cardiac death.
New research suggests the fatty acids may possess an even more fundamental benefit: Heart patients with high omega-3 intake had relatively longer "telomeres," which are stretches of DNA whose length correlates with longevity.
Cardiologists from the University of California, San Francisco, and other hospitals measured telomere length over five years in 608 patients who had coronary-artery blockage and previous heart attacks. Researchers found that people with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their white blood cells experienced significantly less shortening of telomeres over five years, as compared with patients with lower omega-3 levels.

Medical Group Urges New Rules on Radiation
The leading professional organization dedicated to radiation oncology has called for enhanced safety measures in administering medical radiation, including the establishment of the nation’s first central database for the reporting of errors involving linear accelerators — machines that generate radiation — and CT scanners.
The group, the American Society for Radiation Oncology, or Astro, issued a six-point plan on Wednesday that it said would improve safety and quality and reduce the chances of medical errors.

Reducing environmental pollution by antibiotics
Widespread use of antibiotics to prevent and treat infections in people and animals as well as for promoting growth in livestock is causing environmental contamination. A new study highlights the need for extra measures to reduce environmental pollution from antibiotics. Such pollution can increase the risk of diseases caused by bacteria that become resistant to antibiotics. |
GMO Contamination of Organic Crops
|
During the Bush administration, Monsanto illegally won USDA approval for its genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa by convincing regulators to bypass a mandatory environmental review.
Organic contamination is devastating for organic farmers, especially organic dairy farmers, most of whom use organic alfalfa for feed. The presence of even the smallest amount of GE material can cause a farm to lose its organic certification. And court documents indicate that early plantings of GE alfalfa did contaminate conventional alfalfa. Yet the USDA maintains that Monsanto's existing safety protocols are good enough.
Even worse, the USDA concluded that the possibility of contamination of organic fields is of no concern, since consumers won't care if their organic food or milk contains genetically engineered components. Yet central to the definition of the USDA Organic label is the total absence of genetically modified ingredients. An overwhelming majority of consumers buy organic to avoid GE products and would be shocked to learn the USDA is so cavalier about the risks of transgenic contamination.
Please sign Petition and tell the USDA you care about GE contamination. Keep Monsanto's genes out of our food! Follow this link. |
