Jason Gordon

Greetings from Jason Gordon, Founder, Yellow Courtyard

Dear Colleagues, Friends, Practitioners,

It has been a while since we, the South Florida healthcare practitioner community, came together. What better time to reconnect than during challenging times that call on community? It’s a time of change for all things and spring and the time of new creation, is upon us.

I would like to invite you to celebrate the planting of seeds and new beginnings.

On April 22nd, Earth Day, bring a seed, either in hand or symbolically, to offer Mother Earth as a healing for each one of us in our global community.

This party will initiate a monthly practitioner community gathering to share information, support, and good times for all who wish to participate.

Come join in the celebration!
Pot Luck Dinner
Location: 205 Rivo Alto Dr. Miami Beach, FL 33139
Time: 7:00 pm

Please RSVP to Susan Luck at sluck@yellowcourtyard.com or 305-695-9380 x. 1802.

I look forward to reconnecting with each of you,

Jason

Editor's Corner

It is an exciting time, and change is in the air. This past month has been transformational with so many new conversations and opportunities for healing our broken health care system. Many of us have been part of community discussions, integrative health conferences, and a national summit on integrative health care, all part of an emerging inclusionary model based on caring for the whole person, body, mind, and spirit.

As part of this momentum, on February 27-29th, 2009, The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and The Bravewell Collaborative partnered to convene The Summit on Integrative Medicine and the Health of the Public in Washington D.C. This historic meeting explored the science and practice of integrative health care and addressed the mental, emotional, and physical aspects of the healing process for improving patient outcomes and promoting the nation's health.
In attendance were over 800 health care providers, health policy analysts, health reform advocates, and members of Congress.

After speaking with several practitioners who participated in the Summit, these were the major themes that emerged from the hearings:

  • Need to shift from focus on disease to health promotion
  • Align integrative health with wellness and prevention into healthcare reform
  • Expand primary care providers to include licensed CAM providers (acupuncturists, massage therapists, energy healers )
  • Need for fundamental reform in education as well as care delivery

Senator Tom Harkin said that the most important thing we can do individually is to contact our legislators regarding our thoughts about the changes that need to occur.

Congressional hearings and panel discussions from leaders in the field of Integrative health care included Dr’s Andrew Weil, Mark Hyman, Dean Ornish, along with many others. All hearings and discussions are now available on the Institute of Medicine website at: www.iom.edu.

The following is a letter of support for an expanded vision of health care reform in the new administration from Senator Edward Kennedy.

Warmly,

Susan

Practitioner Corner: Psychotherapeutic Reiki

Psychotherapeutic Reiki is a technique that blends Eastern energy concepts and Western psychological perspectives. It is used to treat psychological, emotional and behavioral problems. This technique utilizes the Reiki energy, mindfulness practice, cognitive psychotherapy, and stress management.

Psychotherapeutic Reiki understands psychological health as the unimpeded flow of energy in the human energy field. Humans cultivate and maintain psychological health by being able to clear and release the negative effects of any traumatic experience or set of conditions that occur in their lives as development progresses and unfolds. However, just as water in the physical world flows when unimpeded and is "blocked" or "stuck" when obstructed, so too can energy become blocked in the human energy field.

  Spring Renewal

Health Corner:
Spring Cleaning: Spring renewal
in collaboration with the Earthrose Institute (www.earthrose.org)

An Acupuncturist colleague recently told me that Detoxification in Chinese Medicine terms means the removing of "devil toxins," which included “heat, cold, parasite, damp, fire and food toxins”. He went on to describe that in Chinese medicine there are a number of different toxic patterns; phlegm, damp liver, qi stagnation or blood stagnation. In Western thinking, on a cellular level, our body is more likely to store toxins in the winter season and spring becomes the perfect time to release them through increased activity, lighter eating, or a detoxification program.
